Big FM's Big Chennaiite Awards honour unsung heroes of Chennai

Chennai: The city of Chennai celebrated its 375th birthday a few weeks ago, but the festivities have continued. As part of the celebrations, Big FM has created the Big Chennaiite awards to honour ordinary people who have made a difference to the city and the society.
An exhaustive on-air campaign by the radio station saw Chennaiites nominate individuals from different fields who have made a difference to the city.
The 2014 Big Gallantry Award went to Major Mukund Varadarajan who killed three terrorists in Kashmir before being shot dead in April this year.
R Vardarajan, father of Major Mukund Vardarajan, said, "It is a recognition of my son's hard work. We thought people would be scared when they heard about Mukund, but now people want to join the armed forces. My family and I are very proud of Mukund."
Chennai's noted historian S Muthaiah presented the Big Chennaiite Award for Education Initiative to V Ranganathan of the Vidyarambam Trust. The trust helps to promote education among underprivileged children from rural areas in Tamil Nadu.
V Ranganathan said, "The award means a lot. It means I need to do multiple times what I am doing now."
Other winners included Abdul Ghani of Green Kalam for fighting against global warming. Jegan of Nalla Keerai was presented the Big Entrepreneur Award for promoting organic farming.
The Big Social Initiative award went to Muralidharan of Sevalaya for providing free shelter, food and education to underprivileged people living in rural areas and The Big Sports Award was given to Ram Vishwanathan who through his organisation Chennai Runners made running a movement in the city.
