2014 U.S. Open bracket update: Roger Federer wins, Caroline Wozniacki advances to semis
Federer made quick work of Roberto Bautista Agut and will face Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals.
Second-ranked Roger Federer advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 U.S. Open by beating No. 17 Roberto Bautista Agut at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., on Tuesday.
Federer dispatched of Bautista Agut in straight sets, needing less than two hours to earn a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory. The 33-year-old star had little trouble after Bautista Agut reeled off three consecutive games to turn a four-game deficit into just one in the first set. Federer was not broken at any point during the remainder of the match and easily advanced to his 10th U.S. Open quarterfinal in 11 years.
No. 20 Gael Monfils will face Federer in the quarterfinals after taking down No. 7 Grigor Dimitrov earlier in the day.
Wozniacki to semis
In nighttime play at Arthur Ashe Stadium, No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki dispatched No. 13 Sara Errani with ease, 6-0, 6-1 on Tuesday night. Wozniacki advances to face Peng Shuai in the semifinals.
Williams sisters lose doubles match
Venus and Serena Williams fell to Russian duo Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the quarterfinals of the women's doubles bracket. Makarova and Vesnina, the fourth-ranked doubles team in the world, won in straight sets, though the first one required a tiebreaker.
Serena Williams will resume singles action on Wednesday. The top-ranked women's player will take on Flavia Pennetta in the quarterfinals. If Williams wins, she could see Makarova in the singles semifinals, though Makarova would have to get past Victoria Azarenka.
