Patel, Miller see Punjab home
The Kings XI Punjab defeated the Barbados Tridents by four wickets with just two balls to spare thanks to some fireworks from David Miller and Akshar Patel in the final two overs in a Champions League T20 match at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Saturday.
The Kings XI finished on 178 for six in 19.4 overs after the Tridents had posted 174 for six in their 20 overs after being sent into bat by the Kings XI captain, George Bailey. Miller and Patel smashed 47 runs off 19 balls to end the hopes of the Caribbean men, who were looking buoyant with just two overs remaining and still 25 runs needed.
The turning point in the match came in the penultimate over, bowled by Ravi Rampaul (2-50), as Patel smashed three boundaries and a six as the right-arm fast-medium bowler conceded 20 runs. Miller ended the match by smashing Jason Holder (0-38) over wide long-off for six.
Miller ended undefeated on 46 off 34 balls with three boundaries and two sixes. Patel, who faced just nine deliveries, smashed three fours and a six to end on 23 not out.
The Tridents did not do themselves any justice as the bowlers conceded six wides, with four of them coming in the opening four overs. Virender Sehwag (31) and Manan Vohra (27) added 41 for the first wicket off just 27 balls to give the Mohali-side a decent start to the chase.
Sehwag was joined at the crease by Wriddhiman Saha (14) when Vohra hit a delivery from Ramnpaul straight to Jonathan Carter at short mid-wicket. The pair scored 35 for the second wicket off 27 deliveries but then the wheels seemed to come off.
James Franklin (1-17) first had Saha caught by Dilshan Munaweera on the deep cover boundary. Glenn Maxwell (16) then fell two overs later to Rampaul before Bailey (seven) and Thisara Perera (nought) both fell to the spinners. Bailey holed out to Franklin off Jeevan Mendis (2-18) and Perera fell first ball to Ashley Nurse (1-32).
The two spinners brought the Tridents right back into the game with combined figures of 8-0-50-3 but once they completed their overs, Patel and Miller were able to use the pace of Holder and Rampaul to take their side home.

INNINGS BUILT AROUND REIFER
Earlier, the Tridents 174 was built around Raymon Reifer, who posted an undefeated 60 from just 42 balls, which included three boundaries and four maximums. Munaweera had earlier smashed 50 runs from only 26 balls with five fours and three sixes while giving the Tridents a good start with William Perkins (10), as the pair posted 54 for the first wicket off 31 balls.
Perkins and Munaweera fell within 6 balls as Parvinder Awana (3-46) claimed both their wickets in the 6th over. But then Reifer and Carter (20) brought some stability to the innings with a third wicket stand of 45 from 37 balls. Reifer and Holder (12) scored 28 runs off 17 balls for the 6th wicket before Nurse (eight not out) and Reifer each smashed a six from the final five deliveries to post 15 runs for the 7th wicket.
Perera was the pick of the Punjab bowlers, claiming 2-15 in three overs while Anureet Singh claimed 1-32 with his right-arm medium-paced bowling.
The Tridents will need to tighten up their death bowling and work on their discipline but can take heart from this loss. The Kings XI are the form team at the moment with a strong batting line-up and now have two wins from two starts.
The Tridents’ next outing is against the Cape Cobras next Friday while the Kings XI Punjab play the Northern Knights, also on Friday.
