Chelsea came to the Etihad with a perfect Premier League record through the first month of the season, and seemed likely to win a fifth consecutive game after Andre Schürrle gave Chelsea a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute. Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta was given a second yellow card in the 66th after clashing with Chelsea striker Diego Costa, meaning all Chelsea had to do was hold off 10-man Manchester City for 19 minutes.
The Blues likely never expected that club legend Frank Lampard would make the difference. Lampard came on in the 78th minute and was given an ovation by the traveling Chelsea supporters, and ended up scoring the equalizer seven minutes later. James Milner raced past Schürrle down the left edge of the penalty area to receive a wonderful pass from David Silva, and cut back to Lampard in the center of the area. Chelsea’s all-time leading goal scorer arrived at just the right time to beat Thibaut Courtois, scoring in vintage Lampard fashion.
Lampard did not celebrate his goal, and after the game ended walked over to share a special moment with the visiting fans.
