La Liga: Barcelona 5-0 Córdoba: Match Review

David Ramos/Getty Images
A recap of Barcelona's emphatic win to end 2014 on a high note
FC Barcelona ended 2014 in exciting fashion, as the Blaugrana dominated Córdoba and won comfortably by 5-0, with goals from Pedro, Piqué, Luis Suárez (his first in La Liga!) and a brace from Lionel Messi. It was an easy win, with no defensive mistakes and solid performances by almost every player, if not all.

Coach Luis Enrique made a few changes to his usual starting eleven. Jérémy Mathieu was replaced by Javier Mascherano as Gerard Piqué's partner on defense; Martín Montoya started his second straight game in the right-back slot, and Xavi Hernández was benched, with Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Andrés Iniesta in the midfield. Lucho also decided to put Neymar on the bench, and stick with Pedro Rodríguez's great recent form.
The match could not have started better for Barcelona. Controlling the possession, the Blaugrana were patienly waiting to pass the ball at the right time and try to create a chance. The ball went from left to right, and after a Montoya cross was poorly cleared byCórdoba's defense, Ivan Rakitic made a spectacular left-footed pass to Pedro, who needed two touches to control the ball and put it away from the goalkeeper and into the net. 1-0 Barça and a promising start.
Shortly after, Barça created another chance. A nice long pass by Messi found Iniesta wide open on the other side. Andrés made a nice move, but his shot was weak and easy forJuan Carlos to save.
To end a blitzing ten-minute stretch, Luis Suárez came very close to scoring his first La Liga goal. After a Jordi Alba cross, Suárez made an awkward but effective move to fire a shot that went just outside.
After that, Córdoba definitely parked the bus and put nine men behind the ball, leaving Ghilas alone to take advantage of an eventual passing mistake by Barça's midfield to create a dangerous chance. And that indeed happened in the 18th minute, when Sergio Busquets slept for a second and let the ball go over his head into open space. Ghilas controlled it, dribbled past Mascherano and tried to shoot past Bravo, but his shot was wide.
Then the game turned into a monologue. The usual Barça versus a bus at the Camp Nou began. In pursuit of another goal, the Blaugrana struggled to create real chances, and relied on ineffective lob passes by Messi and Iniesta that never reached Pedro or Suárez. Jordi Alba and Montoya were very active on offense, entering the box as much as possible. Ivan Rakitic was also an important part of the game, and he attempted some outside shots.
In the final ten minutes, Barça increased their intensity and blitzed Córdoba once again. The team was dominant on the left side, and at least three very good chances by Iniesta and Jordi Alba were created, but weren't converted. Suárez and Messi moved a lot but delivered little, and the first half ended a lot less exciting than the hot start suggested. What would the second half bring?
***
Back from the locker room, Enrique made no changes, and the same starting eleven remained on the pitch. Unlike the first half, Lionel Messi was lively, running all over the place and getting into the box. He had two shots blocked in two minutes, and looked a lot different from his showing in the first 45 minutes.
Iniesta and Pedro, on the other hand, continued to play great, and they were responsible for the second Barça goal. Eight minutes into the period, Andrés found Pedrito with an excellent through ball; Pedro then found Luis Suárez alone in front of the goalkeeper. Suárez showed tremendous composure and nutmegged (is that a word?) the GK to finally score his first La Liga goal.
From then on, the match was pretty much the same as the first half; Córdoba behind the ball and flooding their own box, Barça trying to find some space to do something. It didn't happen, but unlike other matches against weaker opponents, the Blaugrana were never tested, and continued to have control of the game, which seemed over at that point. Luis Enrique decide to make substitutions; Xavi was the first to enter, in place of Rakitic.
And the Maestro showed why he's still great. When it seemed like nothing was going to happen anymore, Xavi delivered a perfect set piece cross to Gerard Piqué, who jumped all over Córdoba's defenders and headed home the third score, Gerard's second La Liga goal this season.
With Pedro and Suárez already on the scoreboard and the game decided, the only thing left to make the day perfect was a Messi goal.
We got it. Them. Two of them.
The first one happened in a corner kick, deflected by a Córdoba defender right into Leo's right foot. A perfect strike for Messi finished the play, and Barça were up 4-0. A few minutes later, a Jordi Alba cross was once again deflected by the defense, and the ball came right into Messi. With a fantastic first touch to control the ball, Leo shot again with his right foot. Juan Carlos got a piece of it, but not enough to avoid the goal.
manita to cap off 2014. Certainly, the year ends in an exciting way. Now, a two-week holiday break. Barça return to action on January 4th, at the always tough environment of Anoeta Stadium, against the also tough Real Sociedad. But that's only in 2015. This year's Barcelona football has come to a close. In an awesome way.

National Math Day is now ‘GANIT’

NEW DELHI: Continuing with the new tradition of giving Hindi names to policies and programmes, National Mathematics Day, celebrated on December 22 to mark the anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, has been now christened GANIT (mathematics).

GANIT is an acronym for Growing Aptitude in Numercial Innovations & Training. This year, Ramanujan's anniversary will be a week-long affair intended to "encourage teachers and students towards mathematics education" and make the subject more interesting, and reduce the fear for learning the subject through various activities and use of Information & Communication Technology.

Through the week students will do projects with geogebra, watch video programmes on mathematics and can also contribute their resources in the form of audios, videos, interactive objects, images, documents, posters, activities or in any other form on national repository of open educational resources.

Geogebra is a mathematical software and derives its name from geometry and algebra. This is used for creating mathematical constructions and models and allows interactive explorations by dragging objects changing parameters. Students will also get an opportunity to do projects on magic square.

North Korea threatens to target White House after claims it was behind Sony hacking

An undated picture released by the North Korean Central News shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un surrounded by cheering soldiers as he is touring a front-line military detachment.

President Barack Obama is “recklessly” spreading rumours of a Pyongyang-orchestrated cyberattack of Sony Pictures, North Korea says, as it warns of strikes against the White House, Pentagon and “the whole US mainland, that cesspool of terrorism”.
Such rhetoric is routine from North Korea’s massive propaganda machine during times of high tension with Washington.
But a long statement from the powerful National Defense Commission late Sunday also underscores Pyongyang’s sensitivity at a movie whose plot focuses on the assassination of its leader Kim Jong-un, who is the beneficiary of a decades-long cult of personality built around his family dynasty.
The US blames North Korea for the hacking that escalated to threats of terror attacks against US movie theatres and caused Sony to cancel The Interview’s release.
Obama, who promised to respond proportionately to the attack, told CNN’s State of the Union in an interview broadcast Sunday that Washington is reviewing whether to put North Korea back on its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
The National Defense Commission, led by Kim, warned that its 1.2 million-member army is ready to use all types of warfare against the US.
“Our toughest counteraction will be boldly taken against the White House, the Pentagon and the whole US mainland, the cesspool of terrorism, by far surpassing the ‘symmetric counteraction’ declared by Obama,” said the commission’s policy department in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.
North Korea has said it knows how to prove it had nothing to do with the hacking and proposed a joint investigation with the US.
North Korea and the US, which fought each other in the 1950-53 Korean War, remain technically in a state of war because the conflict ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The US stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea to deter aggression from North Korea.
The rivals are locked in an international standoff over the North’s nuclear and missile programs and its alleged human rights abuses.
In the spring of last year, tension dramatically rose after North Korea issued a string of fiery threats to launch nuclear strikes against Washington and Seoul.

Sports:Silva scores 2 as City draws level with Chelsea

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — David Silvascored twice Saturday as defending champion Manchester City, playing without a recognized striker, provisionally drew level with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 victory against Crystal Palace.Manchester City's Yaya Toure, right, scores despite the attentions of Crystal Palace's Mile Jedinak, second right, during the English Premier League soccer match between Manchester City and Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England, Saturday Dec. 20, 2014. Both Chelsea and City have 39 points, but City has played one more game than Chelsea, which travels to Stoke City on Monday. Chelsea tops the league thanks to a superior goal difference of 23 to City's 22.
After a listless first half at the Etihad Stadium, City began the second with two goals by David Silva who struck after 49 and 61 minutes with two left-foot shots, the first taking a deflection off Palace defender Scott DannYaya Toure swept in City's third with 10 minutes remaining.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini said: "It was a very good win, a very good performance. I enjoyed the way the team worked the whole week — to work in a different way without strikers.
"Palace are a team who know how to defend. It was a great job to score three goals."
Palace offered tough resistance in the opening period as City, missing injured strikers Sergio AgueroEdin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, as well as captain and defense lynchpin Vincent Kompany, struggled to penetrate and failed to produce a single shot on target.
Playing with six midfielders, City enjoyed long spells of possession and survived a few scares before breaking through and taking control.Manchester City's David Silva, left, celebrates with teammates after scoring against Crystal Palace during the English Premier League soccer match between Manchester City and Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England, Saturday Dec. 20, 2014. City increased the tempo in the second half and went ahead within four minutes when Zabaleta burst into the box and pulled the ball back for Silva whose shot struck Dann and looped overJulian Speroni.
City continued to press and scored its second when Silva diverted the ball in from six yards following an accurate low cross by Aleksandar Kolarov.
It was Silva's last significant act before he was replaced by Frank Lampard.
Palace's hopes were dashed when a headed goal by James McArthur was ruled out for offside as the visitors sought a way back into the game before Toure scored City's third with nine minutes remaining, appearing to be played onside by Fernandinho.
Palace manager Neil Warnock said: "I don't know why top class officials get it wrong. It wasn't even close. It was a disgraceful decision."
Navas released Milner who held the ball up before feeding Toure, who strode forward and hit a powerful shot high past the goalkeeper.

Aamir Khan’s ‘PK’ box office collections hit Rs 26.63 cr on Day 1, fails to ink record, beaten by Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘HNY’

A host of reasons may well have been responsible for Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma starrer 'PK' not being able to generate first day box office collections records. (Bollywood Hungama)

The ‘anticipation’ over Aamir Khan starrer ‘PK’, which released Friday, has been deflated, considerably, as far as box office collections are concerned.
According to reports, ‘PK’ box office collections have been Rs 26.63 crore on Day 1. Earlier, the business of the movie had been reported to be Rs 30 crore but was later rectified.
The producers of ‘PK’ and Aamir Khan himself, were quite secretive and coy leading up to the release of the film about its content, building up the anticipation among the fans who were expected to rush to the theatres in droves.Anushka-SHarma-PK-Aamir-630

While the crowds in cinemas did jump, they were nowhere near what the year’s best movies have been able to generate and where the plots were more or less out there in the public domain much before the films themselves released. Is this a lesson for those who may look to follow in Aamir Khan’s footsteps? Time will tell.
A number of reasons may have been responsible for Aamir Khan not being able to generate first day records. Among them the foremost is that Friday was not a holiday (some top movies of 2014 raced ahead because they released on Friday when it was a holiday and in fact, some reaped rich rewards due to the super-weekend too).
The other reason may well be that once people saw the ‘nude’ poster of Aamir Khan, the rest of the message was clear to the fans – there would be no ‘full Monty’ by the superstar – everyone knew that that was not forthcoming as far as Anushka Sharma too was concerned. The highlight was already out and the rest, whatever it is, could never equal the sensationalism of the image.
