18. 25 pm: Death toll rises to 21 in Andhra Pradesh
Special Commissioner, State Disaster Management Authority, K Hymavath told PTIthat the death toll in cyclone-related incidents has gone up to 21 in Andhra Pradesh.
YSR Congress Party President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy would tour the cyclone-ravaged areas of north coastal Andhra Pradesh from tomorrow and oversee the relief and rehabilitation works.
Owing to the natural calamity, the Opposition party has also postponed its October 16 state-wide protest programme over delay in implementation of waiver of farm loans. "Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy will leave for Rajahmundry and reach Vizag in whatever mode of transport that is available and tour the battered Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts.
"He will stay put there to oversee the relief and rehabilitation works, meet the affected families and help them get faster relief," senior YSRC leader Dharmana Prasada Rao told reporters here.
17. 45 pm: Chandrababu Naidu conducts aerial survey of affected areas
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Monday conducted an aerial survey to get first hand detail of the devastation caused by cyclonic storm 'Hudhud', while three more senior IPS officers were deputed to oversee relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. Deputy Chief Minister N Chinna Rajappa, Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu and others accompanied Naidu.
The Chief Minister, who has decided to camp in this port city to oversee the relief operations, reviewed the situation today. He left for Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad last evening, hours after the "very severe" cyclonic storm hit the city, leaving behind a trail of devastation.
Naidu has asked his Cabinet colleagues and senior bureaucrats to rush to Visakhapatnam for providing expeditious relief to the victims of the cyclone. According to the Disaster Management Department, six persons, including a baby, were killed in different rain- related incidents in the cyclone-hit districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram. Parakala Prabhakar, Advisor (Communications) to Andhra Government, told reporters in Hyderabad that about five lakh people, evacuated from vulnerable places, are being provided shelter and food in relief camps.
15.50 pm: Karnataka govt to assist Andhra in restoring power supply
Karnataka government has agreed to assist neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to restore electricity supply in the parts damaged by Hudhud, according to PTI.
An official release said that the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu spoke to his counterpart in Karnataka Siddaramaiah and sought the state's assistance. Immediately responding to the request, Siddaramaiah agreed to send engineers and technical staff from Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation and other power supply companies to Andhra Pradesh.
2.50 pm: 48,000 houses damaged in Odisha
Around 48,000 houses, 24 transformers and 600 electric poles have been damaged in Odisha due to the cyclone Hudhud, said IANS.
"I had a meeting about the damage being done to infrastructure in the cyclone-hit districts. Houses were damaged in southern districts, power lines are badly affected in Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts," Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik said.
Patnaik added that power restoration work is going on and 90 percent of the work will be completed by Monday evening.
Special Relief Commissioner Pradipta Mohapatra said while about 25,000 houses have been damaged in Koraput, 15,000 have been damaged in Gajapati, 7,000 in Rayagada and 1,000 in Malkangiri.
2.44 pm: Tamil Nadu CM announces Rs 5 crore-aid for Andhra Pradesh
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam announced Rs 5 crore financial assistance to Andhra Pradesh in the wake of the damage caused by cyclone Hudhud.
He said on the request of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to set right the power distribution infrastructure, equipment like poles and transformers will be supplied to the state.
Panneerselvam said a team will also be sent to Andhra Pradesh to clear the roads.
1.14 pm: Vizag airport reopens, power and communication still not restored
As Hudhud was scaled down from a very severe storm to a severe storm, the Vizag Airport was reopened after it had been closed down earlier due to damage by the cyclone, according to CNN-IBN.
However, power and communication lines down in Andhra Pradesh were still down. Hundreds of electricity poles and towers were damaged across Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts, which bore the brunt of the cyclone, reported IANS.
With the collapse of communication network, mobile phones went on the blink while Internet service was snapped. None of the telecom service providers could restore the services for the second day.
With no television, mobile phone and internet, Vizag was almost cut-off from rest of the world. People relied on radio sets to keep themselves updated about weather conditions.
Moreover, there was heavy rain forecasted for Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
The navy has now launched P8L Poseidon Recon Planes for rescue operations and the Crisis Management Committee will meet soon to assess the situation.
12.36 pm: Railways announces special trains for relief and rescue
Ministry of Railways announced that it will launch night-long assessment and repair operations in cyclone-affected areas.
The Bhubaneswar-Mumbai CSTM Konark Express will run on its scheduled time via Brahmapur, Palasa, Vizianagaram, Raipur, though without stopping at Visakhapatnam.
To establish and improve rail connectivity with Visakhapatanam, the Railway Ministry said that a passenger special train will run between Bhubaneswar & Visakhapatanam, leaving Bhubaneswar at 2pm today. It will have stoppages at all stations between Palasa & Visakhapatnam.
The ministry also released helpline numbers for various regions. The numbers are 0877-2225810 and 9676903528 for Tirupati, 0863-2222014 for Guntur, 0884-232882 for Samalkot, 0884-2374227 for Kakinada, 0883-2420541,2420543 and 2420780 for Rajahmundry, 0866-2576796,2767070 and 2767040 for Vijaywada, 0884-252172 for Tuni, 040-27700868,272829007 for Secunderabad and 0870-2548660 for Kazipet.
11.58 am: Situation returning to normal, says IMD chief
IMD DG LS Rathore said that the situation was returning to normal. "Situation in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Vizag and east Godavari is near normal," he said, adding that wind speed was normal at 30 kmph.
"We don't expect bad weather in Odisha, rainfall is expected in some internal pockets," SC Sahu, another IMD official said. Sahu also said that rainfall would decrease in south-west Odisha.
IMD also released satellite images of cyclone Hudhud.
10.57 am: PM Modi to visit Vizag tomorrow
PM Narendra Modi will visit Visakhapatnam tomorrow to assess the situation. The Prime Minister posted a tweet, saying that he had also spoken to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
10.06 am: Prepared for any eventuality, says Rajnath
Home Minister Rajnath Singh, in a fresh statement on the cyclone, lauded the relief and rescue operations of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, saying that the states were prepared for any eventuality.
He added that he had spoken to the Chief Ministers of Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal to assess the situation. According to reports, the wind speeds of Hudhud are expected to drop to 60 kmph by Monday afternoon.
09.41 am: Vizag Airport heavily damaged due to Hudhud
Even as reports are now saying that the cyclone has gone down in intensity and become a deep depression, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha saw damage to a lot of areas, one of which was the Vizag airport.
Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those killed, Rs 1 lakh for critically injured and Rs 50,000 for other injured.
