NEW DELHI: Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor was on Monday removed as Congress spokesman with immediate effect.

A press release issued by the party said Tharoor had been removed on the recommendation of the AICC disciplinary committee.

Tharoor has been under fire in the party for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Congress President Sonia Gandhi has accepted the recommendation of the AICC disciplinary committee to remove Shashi Tharoor from the list of spokespersons of the AICC with immediate effect. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee had submitted a complaint in this regard to the disciplinary committee," said party general secretary, organization, Janardan Dwivedi in the press release.

Tharoor accepted the party's decision even as he said he would have welcomed the opportunity to respond to allegations levelled against him by Kerala Congress unit.

"I have seen the press release issued by the AICC, and as a loyal worker of the Congress party, accept the decision of the party president to relieve me of my responsibilities as a spokesman," Tharoor said in a press release.

Tharoor further said he is treating the matter as closed and will make no further comments on the issue.

Kerala Congress had recently sent a report against Tharoor over hisModi praise and had sought action against him.

The state unit of the party had said that it was hurt with Tharoor's Modi praise.

The state unit also reminded Tharoor how the party workers had worked hard for his victory in the Lok Sabha elections.

The former Union minister also faces heat after fresh revelations that his wife Sunanda Pushkar had died due to poisoning.
